Just uphill from downtown Portland, at one of the highest spots in all of Portland sits the neighborhood Sylvan Highlands. Most of the homes in Sylvan Highlands were originally built in the 1930s but the neighborhood continues to grow with new homes, condos and townhomes. Sylvan Highlands is not considered to be a very walkable friendly neighborhood due to narrow roads and lack of sidewalks; however there are plenty of trails throughout that provide the residents an excellent way to get out and enjoy nature. Even though this community is so close to downtown Portland, it doesn't feel too much like the city because of the mature trees, winding streets, homes on big lots that are pretty secluded and private, some with valley or coastal views. Nearby the Oregon Zoo, Hoyt Arboretum, Portland Children's Museum, Japanese Gardens, Worlds Forestry Center and the Veterans Vietnam Memorial provide residents with plenty of activities. Sylvan Highlands neighborhood even includes the western part of Washington Park.
Although Sylvan Highlands is not considered a very walkable community, being near U.S. 26 makes commuting by car convenient. U.S. 26 does tend to get congested easily and being so close to downtown Portland there are numerous side streets that make excellent alternate routes to get to downtown Portland. If travelling by car is not what you desire, there is a light rail service that runs alongside Route 26 called the Max.
Sylvan Highlands Schools
Portland Public School District serves the community of Sylvan Highlands. West Sylvan Middle School, Bridlemile and Ainsworth Elementary School were given a rating of 9/10, Lincoln High School rated 8/10, while Chapman Elementary School received an average rating of 5/10 by Greatschools.org. The ratings for the schools within the Portland Public School District do vary but, most of the schools that serve Sylvan Highlands were given above average ratings.

While most of the homes in Sylvan Highlands are older homes; however there are also newer homes, condos and townhomes available in this neighborhood as well. Many homes reside on larger lots and have a secluded, park-like feel making these homes even more desirable. Approximately eighty-five percent of residents own their homes leaving on fifteen percent renters. The home prices in this neighborhood are somewhat competitive for the area. Sylvan Highlands has so much to offer its residents with its nearby amenities - parks, trails, zoo, restaurants, bars and shops and of course the beautiful homes and scenery.
